Scholarship Impact
The Lawrenceville-Duluth Alumni Chapter (LDAC) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has been a beacon of support for African American male students in Gwinnett County since its inception. Through mentorship, scholarships, and community service, LDAC empowers young men to achieve their dreams and make a lasting impact in their communities. The following stories of former mentees and scholarship recipients demonstrate how the LDAC Kappa League Program and the LDAC Foundation Scholarship have shaped their futures, enabling them to become leaders in their respective fields.

Bobby Sarpong
Bobby is an experienced nuclear missile crew commander and instructor with the US Air Force. He was also a five-year mentee of the LDAC Kappa League Program, an LDAC Foundation Scholarship recipient, and a University of Georgia grad. He was the first in his family to attend college. His story embodies the purpose and mission of the Kappa League program. Bobby is now a member of Kappa Alpha Psi.
Charles Orgbon III
Charles was a recipient of the LDAC Foundation Scholarship. He went on the graduate from the University of Georgia and recieved a master’s Johns Hopkins University. He is currently a consultant with Deloitte’s Risk & Financial Advisory Services. Prior to joining Deloitte, he worked in the non-profit sector with various environmental, philanthropic and youth volunteer organizations. Watch the Greening Forward Documentary.
Derrick Brown
Prior to becoming a defensive tackle for the Carolina Panthers, Derrick was an active mentee in the LDAC Kappa League Program throughout high school. Upon graduating, he went on the be a standout student-athlete, both on and off the field at Auburn University. In addition to being an All-American, he was named Auburn’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2020 and he served on the SEC Student-Athlete Leadership Council, where he led a number of community service projects. Now, through the Derrick Brown Foundation he makes an impact off the field through donation and support to underprivileged kids in Charlotte.
Garrett Redditt
In 2019, Garrett received a full scholarship from the Posse Foundation. He is currently a Junior at Texas A&M, majoring in Environmental Design/Architectural Studies. In his spare time, he serves as on the Southwest Black Student Leadership Council and the National Organizaoin of Minority Architecture Students.
Jamal Makin Shabazz
After graduating high school in 2010, Jamal Makin Shabazz, went on to attend Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) where he studied Sequential Arts. While at SCAD he utilized his leadership skills gained from Guide Right and became president of the Black Student Association. After graduating in 2015, Jamal started his own company, Merkurii Publishing and is writing & illustrating his own book series known as “a planet called merkurii” with the desire of turning into an animated series.
Xavier Bryant
In 2019, Xavier received a full scholarships from the Posse Foundation. Xavier is currently a Junior at Brandeis University in Massachusetts, Health Science, Society and Policy. He participates in a number of community service projects, including serving a mentor for for local high school students.
Derrick Brown
